World Senior individuals start tomorrow in Serbia

For more information about chess for over-50s, please see our Seniors calendar. Newcomers to 50+ chess should read our Seniors introduction page. We also have pages for specific British Seniors and Irish Seniors news.

The individual World Senior Championships will start this week in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia. Entry lists are now available on chess-results where pairings and results will soon be available once players arrive and the tournaments begin.

This will be a dedicated page for the event, with other news remaining on our usual Seniors news page.

Today is the main arrival date and the first round will be played starting 3pm local time tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 3rd November. There are four sections, each of 11 rounds as usual. Sunday 8th November is a rest day, with an optional side event, and the final round starts at 2pm local time on Saturday 14th November.

We expect that several games in each section will be broadcast loive on Lichess and other platforms with some time delay. Time in Serbia is the usual central European time, one hour ahead of GMT in winter.

When the results page was updated on 31st October it listed 125 entries for the Open 50+, 27 for the Women's 50+, 209 for the Open 65+ and 29 for the Women's 65+. Final numbers may be slightly different but these will be strong tournaments with a good entry.

We intend to update this page tomorrow evening with the confirmed entry numbers and the names of top seeded players, but the leading contenders (especially in the Open sections) will not meet until after several rounds.

We hope it will be possible thereafter to have brief reports daily during the event, although we shall be away from home for most of it. Your editor and many of his friends will play instead in the Cap Negret Seniors in Altea, Spain, which starts on Saturday. There will probably be no update on Friday when we are travelling.

It is also now confirmed that the 2027 World Senior individual championships will be organised by the Italian federation and played at Orosei on the east coast of Sardinia from 1-14 October. This should prove to be a popular venue as the weather there should be warmer than in Serbia, especially with the earlier dates.
